...When site managers tell you there's 'no such thing' and strangely, they're only right after they tell you.
I've probably been using computers longer than either of these guys have been alive... And while maybe the spurious counts are due to spiders or the forum mistaking myself for I (I could envision code which did that)...
...Generally their answer means they're privately reading people's threads without explicit permission. Not that site managers shouldn't be able to read stuff written on their sites, but expectation of privacy means they should only do it if they're fixing something there specifically, not to sate their own curiosity. Nor should they lie about it.

Well, the point is if you try to navigate to the forum, you get a broken 404 message, though it may be possible to feed the page itself via tinkering. In other words, there's no way that a legitimate user should be tripping the guest tag.
But the pages were also counting views that couldn't have been happening, according to the recording data... As in, I wasn't looking at them, and neither was the one other user who had rights to.
And the guests didn't stay disappeared until the developers said they 'didn't exist' no matter how many times I reloaded the page. Nor did the increasing page counts stop...
